Queens cop indicted in fatal collision that killed a construction worker on Grand Central Parkway last April: AG

A city cop from Jamaica was arrested on Friday and booked at the 102nd Precinct in Richmond Hill, where he was charged with manslaughter and other crimes for a fatal collision last April.

NYPD Officer Paul Tyler, 24, was arraigned hours later in Queens Supreme Court on an indictment charging him with manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide for allegedly striking a highway construction worker on the Grand Central Parkway on the morning of Apr. 26, 2023, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced.

Several businesses, two storefront churches damaged during 2-alarm blaze in St. Albans: FDNY

Two storefront churches and a smoke shop were destroyed and three other businesses were damaged during a two-alarm fire in St. Albans on Wednesday afternoon.

The FDNY responded to a call received at 1:16 p.m. of a fire in an event space at 198-03 Murdock Ave. which is part of a commercial strip between 198th and 199th Streets. The blaze spread to neighboring storefronts and the FDNY transmitted a second alarm bringing a total of 25 units and 106 firefighters and EMS personnel to the scene. The blaze was brought under control at 2:20 and there were no injuries reported, according to the FDNY. Fire marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Queens South Narcotics Squad raids illegal smoke shop in Howard Beach

Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato witnessed firsthand the NYPD’s latest crackdown on illicit operations in her own backyard. The raid, led by the Queens South Narcotics Squad, happened at Howard Puff Convenience on March 7, a mere stone’s throw from Pheffer Amato’s Howard Beach office at 159-55 102nd St.

The Narcotics Squad seized more than 30 pounds of unlicensed marijuana products from the premises along with more than 400 packs of untaxed cigarettes.

Mayor defends police use of force during arrests in a confrontation at a migrant shelter in Jamaica

Mayor Eric Adams spent a portion of his weekly briefing on Tuesday at City Hall to defend allegations that the NYPD used excessive force during a confrontation with a Venezuelan couple who live at a migrant shelter at 148-18 Archer Ave. in Jamaica.

On the night of Friday, March 8, at 11 p.m. police from the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica responded to a call of a dispute involving an intoxicated man who was threatening staff. Upon arrival, officers found 47-year-old Yanny Cordero—allegedly drunk— holding his 1-year-old son in the middle of a scrum at the shelter’s elevator, which was captured on video provided to the New York Times.
